7. Wilton Tools

Wilton's history began in 1941 when Hugh W. Vogl, a Czech immigrant, founded the company in Chicago, Illinois. The company was named after the nearby streets, Wilton Avenue and Wrightwood Avenue. Vogl created a 4-inch vise with a unique patented bullet design called the 40S Machinist Vise, known for its strength, precision, and smooth operation. From 1941 to 1945, the Wilton 40S vise was produced in Chicago and sold only to the U.S. Government, mainly for use in factories supporting World War II. After the war, many surplus tools entered the market, which made it difficult for Wilton to compete. To overcome this challenge, Hugh Vogl and his son Alex began building a strong distribution network and expanded the product line. In 1950, Wilton introduced new clamps, including the 540 light-duty carriage clamps and the 900 series heavy-duty machinist clamps. The company moved from Chicago to Schiller Park, Illinois in 1957. By the 1960s, Wilton had become a well-known and trusted brand in the industrial market. Wilton continued to grow by adding new products such as Pow-R-Arm work positioners, hydraulic clamps, and milling machine vises. In the 1970s, the company opened a facility in Winchester, Tennessee to produce smaller vises for hobbyists and DIY users, and also began manufacturing metalworking machines like drill presses and band saws. In the late 1990s, Wilton acquired Warren Tool Group, which included the Columbian Vise brand. In 2002, Wilton and Warren Tool were acquired by WMH Tool Group. Later, the Wilton brand joined other well-known brands such as JET and Powermatic. In 2014, Tenex Capital Management acquired these brands and formed JPW Industries. Today, Wilton continues to grow and provide innovative, high-quality tools. The original bullet vise designed in 1941 remains one of the best-selling industrial vises in the market.
